January 2004 Cinquain Watch

Last Friday, I received a letter from Beverly George in response to a letter I wrote regarding the Yellow Moon competition's policy on cinquains. Currently, the Yellow Moon only accepts didactic cinquains for its cinquain competitions. However, George has read Amaze and expressed a willingness to perhaps re-think this policy at some point in the future.

Although Yellow Moon's cinquain contest is only open to Australian and New Zealand poets, in my efforts to be a cinquain ambassador, I'm interested in all venues which publish, promote, and teach the cinquain form. I believe the difference between my philosophy and George's philosophy is that she views the cinquain as a "beginning," as a place for inexperienced poets to experiment, gain confidence and move on to more challenging forms. I, on the other hand, view the cinquain as a goal, and a properly constructed cinquain as a finished, polished product.

As you read some of the published cinquains I've discovered for you this month, I think you'll agree.
